Use Stoaken's tools from Copilot Chat agent mode in VS Code via .vscode/mcp.json.

Vendor docs

What it does

Copilot's agent mode in VS Code reads your Brands and tokens, exports them as code and proposes token changes for a person to approve. The tools are listed at /docs/mcp.

Before you start

  • A Stoaken account with at least Viewer on a Brand. On the Free plan agents are read only.
  • VS Code with GitHub Copilot. Your organisation's Copilot policy must allow MCP servers.
  • Optional: an API key from Settings > API keys.

Setup

npx stoaken init --client copilot

This writes .vscode/mcp.json, keeping other servers. Open the file in VS Code, click Start above stoaken and sign in in the browser (or paste your API key when asked). Then use Copilot Chat in Agent mode and check the tools picker lists Stoaken's tools.

Configuration

VS Code uses a servers key (not mcpServers). Browser sign-in:

{
  "servers": {
    "stoaken": { "type": "http", "url": "https://www.stoaken.com/mcp" }
  }
}

API key, asked for once and stored by VS Code (nothing secret in the file):

{
  "inputs": [
    { "type": "promptString", "id": "stoaken-api-key", "description": "Stoaken API key (Settings > API keys)", "password": true }
  ],
  "servers": {
    "stoaken": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://www.stoaken.com/mcp",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer ${input:stoaken-api-key}" }
    }
  }
}

Try it

  • "Using Stoaken, list my Brands."
  • "Export the Default theme as CSS and update src/styles/tokens.css."

Troubleshooting

  • init left the file alone: it had comments (JSONC). Paste the entry above in by hand.
  • No tools in chat: you're in Ask/Edit mode; switch to Agent. Or run MCP: List Servers and start stoaken.
  • Wrong key: VS Code stored the first value you typed. Clear the stored input for stoaken-api-key from the MCP server's menu, then start it again.

Limits

  • No tool approves or publishes a release.
  • Writes count towards a per-key limit; Free plan is read only.
  • Servers that use ${input:...} aren't forwarded to Copilot harness sessions; use the browser sign-in there.
  • This guide covers VS Code. Copilot's cloud coding agent on github.com is configured separately in the repository settings and isn't covered yet.
