A token Stoat named Steve

Pull up a chair. Meet our mascot, hear the career’s worth of design token frustration that started it all, and find out where we’re headed next.

Hi there, reader. Pull up a chair, get comfortable, and let us say a proper hello. This warm welcome comes from all of us on the Stoaken team, and from a small, whiskered someone who insisted on being here: our mascot, a stoat named Steve.

If you’re reading this, you’ve arrived at the very beginning. The first page of the first chapter, the bit before anyone knows how the story ends. We like to do things a little differently around here, and that starts with you. You aren’t just someone who’ll use Stoaken one day; you’re part of how it gets made, as much as anyone on our team.

But first things first. Before we tell you what Stoaken is all about, you should meet Steve. And it’s only polite to explain what a stoat actually is.

I : Steve preparing for his journey

A stoat is a small, clever member of the weasel family: quick on its feet, endlessly curious, and remarkably fearless for something that could fit in a teacup. When winter comes, some stoats turn completely white and take on a grander name, the ermine. They’re expert problem-solvers and relentless explorers, and they’re famous for squeezing into places they probably shouldn’t.

(Steve would like it noted that he has never once been stuck. Mostly.)

That’s exactly why Steve the token stoat became the mascot of our design token system.

Tiny. Fast. Clever. Obsessively organised.

Think of Steve as a professional collector of shiny things. Other stoats hoard acorns, or the occasional lost sock. Steve hoards design decisions: that exact shade of green, that perfectly judged bit of spacing, the corner radius everyone argued about for a week. He gathers each one up, gives it a name and tucks it away somewhere safe, so nobody ever has to reinvent it again.

Now that you’ve met Steve, let’s get to the heart of it. Why does Stoaken exist? Why would anyone start a company about design tokens, of all things?

Because we’ve been where you are.

Maybe you’ve opened a design system and found it frozen in time: outdated, half-finished, held together by good intentions. Maybe yours is lovingly looked after, yet changes still slip through unannounced, and nobody can quite say who changed what, or when, or why. Maybe you’ve wanted to try a new colour on a real component, and found the only way to see it was to dig through Figma or Penpot, holding your breath around design work that was signed off weeks ago.

If any of that sounds familiar, you’re in good company. Stoaken was dreamed up by front-end and UI engineers with many years behind us, and we met those same problems again and again: in every industry, on every stack, with every client and at every company. Different logos on the door. The same tangle inside.

A career’s worth of that adds up. Eventually, quietly and then all at once, we decided that someone ought to fix it. And that if we were going to do it, we’d do it properly.

So we started with a handful of simple ideas, the kind Steve could carry in his paws.

The design system is the prize. It deserves to be treated like one, not like a chore that lives at the bottom of someone’s to-do list.

Looking after it should be easy. Not heroic. Not a weekend project. Easy.

Keeping track should be built in. What changed, why it changed and who said yes, recorded as it happens, never pieced together afterwards.

You should see a change before it ships. On your real components, in every mode, before anyone has to find out the hard way.

And underneath all of it: one place where designers and developers both get what they need from a single design system. Where agencies can work in the open, and their clients can review changes right alongside the team, instead of waiting to be told.

Over the coming months we’re entering a closed beta. It’s a quieter season, where we’ll listen hard, polish everything twice and refine what’s on offer before we open the doors to the world. We’re genuinely excited about what we’ve made. We believe Stoaken can help people fall in love with their design systems again, and finally feel that they understand every token in them.

As for Steve, he’ll turn up in every story we write. He’s the small, furry face of our growth, our stumbles and our love for what we do, so expect to see a great deal more of him. He’s already asking about next month’s.

Till next time, folks. Whatever you’re up to, we hope it’s a good one. From our family to yours.

Until next month.
