Community

Design systems shared in the open by teams using Stoaken: browse, like and report them, and share your own.

Browsing

Community opens where you came from: from the website it shows as part of the website, from the app’s sidebar it shows inside the app. Community is public: anyone can look, signed in or not. Sort by Popular (likes, with recent ones counting extra) or Newest, search, or pick a tag. Each system has its own page: who shared it (with the company’s logo when it has one), its licence, its colours first as cards of swatches and ramps, then spacing, corners, type, shadows and the rest drawn as what they are in a wall of cards you can search, its components drawn live, and earlier versions. Pick a mode to see its values.

When a system’s Brand has made its Brand Book public, its page is the Brand Book, in the layout and order the Brand arranged (Docs, Editorial, Board, Chapters or Spec sheet). A slim strip at the top holds Community’s parts: Like, the shared versions, Share (copies the address, or opens your phone’s share sheet), Report and Use this system. Read it on its own page at the foot opens the same book with nothing around it. Systems shared by the Stoaken team get the same kind of page, drawn from their shared copy in Docs. If the book’s file doesn’t load, the page says so, shows the shared listing meanwhile and offers Try again right there.

Play with any component: click it on a system’s page and it opens large, drawn live with that system’s tokens. Switch its Variant (when it has them), its State and the Mode, point at it, press it or tab into it for its interactive states, and Try other tokens to swap any token it uses for another from the same system, or any colour or size. Nothing you try is saved. Each component also has its own page to link to (Its own page), with the system’s other components underneath.

Some systems are brought in by the Stoaken team from well-known open-source projects (shared as Stoaken Curated), such as IBM Carbon. Their tokens come from the projects’ own packages. Their components are Stoaken’s rebuilds on those same tokens, so you can play with them, and they say so: they aren’t the official packages.

Like needs an account (one like each). Report anything wrong, such as a link to an inappropriate site, spam or copied work. Three reports from different people hide a listing until we look at it.

Insights and your stats

Insights (/community/insights) counts what every shared system has in common: the colours teams use and their hues, spacing and type scales, corner radii, fonts, token names, how they group tokens, which components they build, and how many have a dark mode. Each system counts once, so a huge one can’t tip the numbers. They refresh every ten minutes.

On your own listing’s page, Admins of its Brand see How it’s doing: views, likes, how many opened it in Stoaken and saved it to a workspace, views and likes for each of the last 30 days, and any open reports. Nobody else sees it. On a page that is its Brand Book, Stats in the strip opens the same numbers in place, and Arrange opens the Brand’s Book page to change the layout (arranging the book arranges this page; there is no second editor).

Open in Stoaken

Open in Stoaken on a system’s page opens a preview: switch its modes, try its components, read its tokens. Nothing is saved until Save to my workspace, which makes it a Brand in the workspace you have open, with its tokens, modes and components and v1.0.0 live (or waiting, when your workspace needs a different approver). Plan limits apply when you save.

No account yet? You sign up first and come straight back to the same system.

Sharing your design system

An Admin or Owner of a Brand opens its Brand settings and picks Share with community. Five short steps: the live release to share (never drafts), what to share (tokens always; themes and modes, and all, some or none of the components), the listing (name, your company, the address, a description, up to 4 https links), at least 5 tags, then the licence (MIT, Apache 2.0 or CC BY 4.0) and I have the right to share this.

A copy is taken, so later changes stay private until you share a newer release: once a Brand is shared, its card on Overview says On Community with its likes and views (click it for How it’s doing), and its Brand settings offer Community stats, Update community listing (where Update listing shares a newer live release, earlier ones staying viewable, or just changes the details) and Remove from community, which asks you to type the Brand’s name. Copies other people already saved stay theirs, as the licence allows.

Tip: Only your company shows on a listing, never you. Comments, reviewers, votes, drafts and screenshots are never shared.

A listing can have a public Brand Book too: its docs site, rebuilt with every release (the listing itself keeps the copy you shared). Choose Public under the Brand’s Brand Book, and the listing’s page becomes the book. Until then, Admins of the Brand see This page can be your Brand Book on the listing, with Open the Book page; nobody else does.

The company name on a listing is set when you share. Renaming your workspace or organization later doesn’t change a shared listing.
